South Shields & Westoe Club is a community hub and multi-sports club located in South Shields, South Tyneside. the club oversees; South Shields Westoe Rugby Club, South Shields Cricket Club, Westoe Squash Club, and South Shields Tennis Club, providing adult and junior sporting opportunities to its hundreds of members.
The club also supports its community by delivering sports-led programmes in the local community. This includes free sports camps for children from disadvantaged backgrounds and school outreach activities.
South Shields & Westoe Club were impacted by a recent storm which damaged their clubhouse. This put some of their facilities out of use and the club embarked on fundraising campaigns in order to pay for the repairs. Part of the fundraising effort was to seek grants and in order to support the application, a new website was required.
The new website needed to cover the day to day activity of the four sports clubs whilst also showcasing the club’s community portfolio in order to win funding. The client also wanted to promote their facilities for hire and have the ability to take payments through the website in the future.

The challenge associated with this website was to find the right balance between showcasing the sports teams and the community side of the organisation. The site needed to appeal towards people with an interest in sport in the local area and funders simultaneously.
The site needed to feature the unique branding of each of the sports teams and be futureproofed for years to come with additional features ready to ‘switch on’ when required. The website should also perform well on the search engine results pages in order to grow awareness.
We spent a lot of time with the client to deliver a website that matched the unique set of requirements that this project demanded. The time spent was heavily weighted towards the planning stage of the project. We held numerous on-site meetings to fully understand the client, and learn about their internal processes and their different audience groups.
We designed South Shields & Westoe Club’s new website on the WordPress platform. The aesthetics of the site were inspired by the branding of the four sports teams. We were able to adapt club photography and use it across the site to achieve the community feel that was specified.
The structure of the new website was built to match the client’s specifications. This meant keeping the sports team’s content separate from the club’s general fundraising and facilities content. We were able to achieve this by presenting the site map and navigation hierarchy to the client before seeking approval.
We added functionality such as the facility to take online payments with a Stripe integration. This will allow the client to streamline their processes in the future and become more efficient in managing payments for services such as room hire, events and memberships.
The new South Shields & Westoe Club website delivers a fantastic experience for users. The site not only looks great but it is easy to use. The four sports clubs are represented by bespoke pages, built to meet their requirements.
The community areas of the site can be used as a portfolio in funding applications to help the club repair its damaged facilities. There is also functionality which will allow the club to promote its facilities and take online payments for years to come.
